Internships

  • Potentially working with individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Using Recreational Therapy to assist in mental health recovery at one of the following:

    • Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals

    • Hospitals

    • Outpatient Clinics and Treatment

    • Addiction Recovery Centers

    • Public Schools

    • Community Mental Health Centers

    • Veterans Hospitals

    • Residential Living

    • Long-term Care facilities

  • Typically working with kids in either day camps, weekly camps, or camps that extend to multi-week experiences. This setting works with a wide range of populations that include but are not limited to intellectual/developmental disabilities, behavioral health, physical rehab, and more.

  • This setting can include but is not limited to working in physical rehabilitation, psychiatric rehabilitation, hospitals, outpatient clinics, long-term and short-term care facilities, and skilled nursing.

  • Work with individuals of all ages and diagnoses to help increase independence, leisure awareness, recreational opportunities, community involvement and integration, volunteering, vocational opportunities, and social opportunities. The Recreational Therapist may work in long-term or short-term care facilities, state Medicaid agencies, parks and recreation organizations, home health agencies, group and residential homes, and school programs.

  • Working with older adults in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, long-term care facilities, retirement communities, physical rehabilitation, psychiatric rehabilitation, or in the individuals homes, group or residential homes within the community.

  • Other settings you can work in:

    • Prisons

    • State Hospitals

    • Pediatrics

    • Independent Contractor (Only applies to certain states)

    • Telehealth

    • Private Schools

All Recreational Therapists Students are required to fulfill a 560 hr. internship with a Certified Recreational Therapeutic Specialist in order to obtain the ability to practice in a professional setting. Below are a list of settings and descriptions that rec therapists ten to work in.
